soil pH influences the development of tomato root organ (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Studies regarding soil pH affect the growth and fruit production of tomato plants that have been widely published. However, studies on how soil pH affects the root development structure of tomato plants have not been widely reported. Therefore, this paper reports from a study of the effect of soil pH on the root development structure of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The study was conducted with an experiment designed using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 3 treatments and each of them was repeated 6 times. Thus, the number of the tomato plant as the samples was 18 plants. The plants were grown in pots in a greenhouse. At the age of 1 and 2 months after planting (MAP), the plants were observed how the roots developed. The results of the study showed that the soil pH significantly affected the structure and development of the roots of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Compared with pH 5 and pH 9, pH 7 gives the best influence on the development of the main root length, the number of lateral roots, the diameter of main roots, diameter of lateral roots, biomass (dry weight) of plants, and the number of root parenchyma cells of tomato plants.
